Evaluation
The project
The task of the project was to create a 3D robotic
sidekick to accompany me through my avatar’s travels within the Linden
Second Life community – www.http://secondlife.com/
It can then be put up for sale within the SL
Marketplace.
Research
to develop my design I began by Compiling a design pack that I could use to work from. This would consist of things such as sketching, ideas maps and found imagery mood boards.
Strengths within the project
My biggest strengths in this project was my ability to quickly learn my way around the software which allowed me to work around some of the later sections of the tutorial rather than sitting through it and doing it in the exact same way they guy in the video does. For example I created the feet much faster than the guy in the video did as he spent 40 minutes working and explaining components while it only took me 15 minutes to do it my self.
Weaknesses
A weakness I had during this project was slow working process. This was due to my lack of organisational skill throughout the project such as forgetting to update my production log or misplacing files that I needed. I would also become very involved in the making of my sidekick that I would often forget to save multiple version for my production log.
Final Character
The final character that I created met my expectations from the research I had done into 3D characters and also influenced the design. My character consisted of mostly grey, browns and dark silver shades along with rust in some areas. This allowed me to make my sidekick to seem old and in need of attention.
Some of the things that I could have improved upon were the textures of the sidekick as some of the rust sections were too bright which gives a slight glow and stand out too much. I also could have improved the areas of light and dark on my character to add a bit more contrast and create the impression of different materials.
Software
The software I used in this project were Newtek lightwave modeler and NewTek Lightwave Layout. I found both these pieces of software to be very simple and easy to use as I quickly began to learn the software and develop a reasonable understanding of 3D space allowing me to achieve what I wanted.
Solving Problems
Any problems I had that I could deal with, I would either ask a tutor or find a possible way to work around it. Although I did not have and problems with this project apart from my poor project management skills.
What I learnt from the project
From this project I have become very familiar with Newtek Lightwave .I can see how this project has also improved my skills within 3D modeling software as a whole. I can see how this can be useful in the future. I improved the way in which I go about research and any possible ideas generation to make things easier and faster for me in the future as well as different forms of research I can use.
There was nothing in the project that didn’t work for me such as my character not meeting the criteria.
